I was browsing Kotaku and read a few stories on football (soccer).
Then I commited the error of reading the comments.
I have a question for all of you americans oppo fellows:
Why americans (not generalizing, but almost all of you) hate or ditch sports or things you're not good enough?
Why do you think NBA; MLB; NFL NHL are "world titles"???
And this is asked by someone who used to play American Football here in Brazil, did testing for pitcher, and had a friends team of Hockey!
I love almost all kind of sports, but I can't understand why americans don't give enough credit to sports that are not popular in there?
have a wheeling Camaro for your time!

Because we are the best, and any competition which doesn't show that we are the best must be either broken or dumb.

Why americans (not generalizing, but almost all of you) hate or ditch sports or things you're not good enough?
Probably the same reason Basketball isn't the #1 sport in India; people prefer things they are good at.
Why do you think NBA; MLB; NFL NHL are "world titles"???
Because the NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL are the undisputed top leagues in their sports.
Also, consider that cricket is one of the most popular sports in the World. Why doesn't Brazil embrace cricket?

Because America is a superpower and a self-justified imperialist oppressor, we think that we are better than everyone cus "Murka Fuk Yeh."
I hope it is not almost all of us; I'd like to think that there are some people here aren't stupid.

I don't like Soccer (Football) because I can't get into sports on tv and the case is either American Soccer teams are really boring or Soccer in general is really boring. I like Hockey because of the fights and the atmosphere. The game itself I find just a little more interesting than Soccer.

So, by your logic, F1 sucks? And so do Indycar (remembering that in the last 10 seasons, only 2 champions were americans?) Baseball in olympics (only 1 gold in 5 chances?

I was being sarcastic. I 100% agree that we Americans, as a whole and not just in sports, are a little culturally ignorant, and tend to have a bit of an inferiority complex. That being said, I am very happy to be American.

I can understand your point! But we don't call our soccer championship "world championship"
Logically speaking, if is a "world title doesn't you need to challenge other countries champions?
I can understand why soccer isn't popular over there or cricket over here, but we don't say cricket is a "girly sports" or ditch the sport just because we don't have world class team!
I guess that is the "superiority of our sports" that I can't understand!

Sorry... didn't catch the sarcasm...

You don't call the Série A championship a World Championship because Série A isn't the undisputed top league. Other nations have Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, and Gridiron Football champions, but they absolutely cannot compete with their American counterparts. It would be like a third-league Paraguayan football team competing with Real Madrid.
You don't ditch cricket because you don't have a world-class team? Then why do you ditch cricket?

Basketball - Spain and other countries in Europe have championships that are strong and powerfull!
Baseball - Japan League is strong enough to challenge the teams in MLB!
Football and Hockey I agree that are undisputed!
The cricket thing, I personally don't ditch it, and never knew somenone over here that ditched it! (To be very honest, beside me and some other sport reaks, never knew anyone that ever watched cricket!!!)

European basketball and Japanese baseball cannot keep up with their American counterparts; that talent just isn't there, because all the top players play in America.

Is nice to have a "discussion" with arguments... not only with trolls!
Althought some of my questions will never be answered, I'm happy to see other points of view!

I disgree with this... If I can remember well, last year (or 2012), there was a series of games to see who where better, the Japan champion of Baseball and the champion of MLB... and the japs won!

That was the equivalent to Premier League and La Liga teams playing friendlies against Major League Soccer. Sometimes the MLS teams can steal a win; that doesn't make MLS competitive with the Premier League and La Liga.

I think because there is already an over-saturation of professional sporting leagues that run year round. Hockey,( winter spring) basketball (winter spring), Football, (Fall, winter) Baseball ( spring summer fall). Mix in college football and basketball and you have at least 1 or 2 regional professional games every night. There is a reason there 3 ESPN channels as well as a major network broadcasting something.
I think the motorsport analogy is similar to F1. It isn't that it is unpopular, but the fans are just outnumbered by Nascar fans, so tv networks cater to that market. Mix in Indy car and United Sports car racing and networks don't know what to follow.
I work at a large international company and the world cup has come up just about everyday at lunch. I know a couple of people that go to MLS games because tickets are supper cheap (compared to football, baseball etc) and they can have a night out with their kids.

Nice explanation!
One thing that I hope you americans never get out from soccer is the fans violence.
I love soccer, went to 2 games this Word Cup and everything was perfect (except the location, sinco the stadium is owned by a rival of the team I'm fan), but as soon as the WC ends, I can't see all working that way

I don't get into Soccer as intently as other sports. When they stop "acting as if they got hurt when they didn't" then I will watch it more. And in the US, they don't market cricket. Its the same with Lacrosse. Had there been marketing and explanation of how the game is played then there would be more exposure. Some countries stick with sports based on many factors. Its not so easy to have green grass everywhere for football fields. Its also not feasible to build basketball courts in some countries, like Bosnia or Lebanon.
